Media & Culture
• For this assignment, you’ll spend some time thinking about the degree to which
we are immersed in pop & folk cultures everyday. Can you find reasons why
something that seems to be completely a part of pop culture has some folk
cultural influences, or vice versa?
• You’ll also learn about the convergence hypothesis and local consumption
cultures in Chapter 2 and consider whether globalization is giving everyone a
homogenous culture, or whether regional differences still matter.
1. Read Chapter 2 and become familiar with the difference between folk culture and
popular culture, and read about the convergence hypothesis and local
consumption cultures.
2. You’re going to spend some time thinking about folk and pop cultural influences on
some of your favorite media. Choose from the following topic areas: music,
advertising, films or television shows. You’re going to have to select 10 (or
more) things to compare from the subject area of your choice that have something
in common. Here are some examples:
• 10 Super Bowl commercials
• 10 female vocalists
• 10 favorite foreign films
• 10 television shows from the 1980s
• 10 bands my parents listen to
3. Make a graph. Put one data point for each of your musician/commercial/show/film
selections on a graph by doing the following:
• Draw (by hand or by computer) an x‐axis and label it “folk culture” on the left
side and “popular culture” on the left hand side. Add a y‐axis and label it with
“locally famous” on the top and “globally famous” on the bottom.
• To decide where each point goes, consider how much each of your selections is
immersed in pop culture and whether there are any significant folk culture
influences. Then consider whether each of your choices is known in most
countries, or in a small area. Use the internet to find evidence to support
your claims.
o If you choose something like Super Bowl commercials, do you know how
many people watch the Super Bowl and in how many countries?
o In order to see contrast between your selections, it may be helpful to
make a few selections that are local (like a local band, commercials or
local companies, or student films) and then a few that are global (world
famous musicians, television shows that are watched in most countries,
etc.).
4. Write an essay following these directions:
• Consider the convergence hypothesis and local consumption cultures. Does
your data support the convergence hypothesis, or challenge it? Does your
data support the idea of local consumption cultures?
